Former Lagos governorship candidate Funso Doherty has announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Doherty made the declaration on Friday during a party meeting, with the announcement later shared on social media by ADC Vanguard, the party’s mobilisation arm.
In a video message, the former candidate expressed his readiness to lead the state, saying he was stepping forward with humility and a vision for better governance.
The ADC also threw its weight behind his ambition, describing him as a strong and marketable candidate capable of challenging for power in Lagos.
His declaration comes just weeks after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party he joined in 2024.
In his resignation letter dated March 29, Doherty cited internal crises within the PDP, particularly a court ruling that nullified the party’s 2025 convention and worsened factional divisions.
He argued that the development had effectively handed control of the party to a faction aligned with interests supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a situation he said he could not support.
Doherty maintained that Lagos residents deserve better governance, stressing that many have long awaited meaningful improvements in their daily lives.
The politician had earlier contested the 2023 Lagos governorship election under the ADC before defecting to the PDP, and his latest move signals a return to the party as he prepares for another run in 2027.
