A Canada-based Nigerian doctor, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised singer Portable to undergo a brain scan following his recent celebrity boxing clash with skit maker Carter Efe.
The high-profile bout, held over the weekend in Lagos, drew widespread attention from fans and celebrities, with Portable eventually losing the contest.
The outcome quickly sparked reactions on social media, especially after videos from the match showed the intensity of the fight.
In a viral post sighted on Monday, Onwumelu popularly known as Dr Zo recommended that the singer undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to check for possible internal injuries sustained during the bout.
He expressed concern that Carter Efe delivered repeated blows to sensitive areas of Portable’s head, warning that the singer could be at risk of a subdural haematoma, a potentially serious brain condition.
“This is meant to be an exhibition match for entertainment, not a fight where participants are subjected to that level of harm,” he said.
“I watched the video, and the punches delivered raise concerns. Anyone close to Portable should ensure he undergoes proper medical evaluation, including an MRI, to rule out any internal damage.”
The doctor also called on organisers of celebrity boxing matches to prioritise safety by making protective gear, such as headguards, compulsory to reduce the risk of head injuries.
Before the fight, Portable had expressed confidence in his fitness and chances of victory, citing his previous wins against rapper Speed Darlington and actor Charles Okocha in similar exhibition bouts.
