The Kogi State Government has confirmed the rescue of all victims abducted from the Daarul-Kitab Islamic Orphanage in Lokoja following a coordinated security operation.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lokoja by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo.
Gunmen had attacked the orphanage on April 26 and abducted 23 persons, including pupils and the wife of the proprietor. Fifteen of the victims were earlier rescued on April 27 after security operatives launched intensified operations across the state.
Fanwo disclosed that the remaining nine victims regained their freedom during a rescue mission carried out in the early hours of Wednesday.
He described the operation as a major success in the fight against criminal activities in the state and a moment of relief for the affected families.
According to him, troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army led the search-and-rescue operation with support from other security agencies.
“The operation, which was carried out in the Agbaja Forest axis of Lokoja Local Government Area, led to the safe rescue of five boys, two girls and two adult women.
“The rescued victims have been evacuated to a military medical facility where they are currently receiving medical attention and proper care,” Fanwo said.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, commended officers and personnel of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies involved in the operation for their professionalism, bravery and commitment.
The governor also praised the victims and their families for remaining strong throughout the ordeal.
“The safety and security of residents remain the top priority of this administration. This successful operation further demonstrates our determination to ensure that criminal elements have no safe haven in Kogi State,” Ododo said.
He assured residents that the government would continue to strengthen the state’s security architecture, improve intelligence gathering and support security agencies to respond swiftly to threats.
Ododo also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his support towards maintaining security and stability in the state.
The governor further commended heads of security agencies across the country for their cooperation and coordinated efforts in tackling violent crimes.
Reiterating his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on kidnapping and other criminal activities, Ododo urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.
He assured the public that efforts were ongoing to track down and prosecute those responsible for the abduction.
