Morocco strengthened their chances of progressing to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland in their Group C encounter at Boston Stadium on Friday night.
The North Africans made the perfect start, taking the lead just 70 seconds into the contest through Ismael Saibari, whose composed finish into the top corner stunned the Scottish side and set the tone for a difficult evening.
Scotland entered the match knowing that victory would guarantee qualification for the knockout rounds of a major tournament for the first time in their history. However, Steve Clarke’s men struggled to settle after conceding early and failed to register a shot until the closing stages of the first half.
Morocco continued to threaten and nearly doubled their advantage as Scotland searched for rhythm and attacking momentum.
The second half brought moments of controversy as Scotland appealed for penalties on two occasions. Captain John McGinn first went down inside the area following a challenge from Neil El Aynaoui shortly after the restart, but the referee allowed play to continue.
Later in the game, Scott McTominay also appealed after another challenge in the box, but once again officials dismissed Scotland’s claims.
Scotland created opportunities to equalise, with Ryan Christie missing a promising chance shortly after the hour mark after being set up by McTominay.
Late pressure from McTominay and Lyndon Dykes failed to produce a breakthrough as Morocco held firm to secure all three points.
The result leaves Scotland facing a difficult task ahead of their final Group C fixture against Brazil on June 24, where they will need a positive result to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
For Morocco, the victory represents another important step in their campaign as they move closer to a place in the knockout stage.
