Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has expressed sorrow over the death of veteran Nigerian actor and theatre scholar, Dr. Kola Oyewo, describing him as a legendary figure whose impact on African drama and storytelling will endure for generations.
Insightlinks had earlier reported that the respected actor passed away on Friday with the death announced by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo.
Reacting to the development in a statement shared on his X account on Saturday, Atiku paid tribute to Oyewo’s remarkable contribution to the theatre industry and African cultural heritage.
He described the late actor as a celebrated performer and educator whose influence extended beyond the stage.
Atiku particularly recalled Oyewo’s memorable portrayal of King Lapite in the classic Nigerian film Saworoide, noting that the role remains one of the defining moments of his distinguished career.
According to the former Vice President, Oyewo’s passing leaves a significant gap in the Theatre Arts community and among admirers of African storytelling across the world.
He also extended condolences to the actor’s family, friends and fans, describing him as an exceptional dramatist and a teacher whose works reflected social consciousness and inspired many.
Atiku prayed for the peaceful repose of the late actor’s soul and noted that his legacy would continue to live on through his contributions to theatre and the arts.
