Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Spanish tactician Andoni Iraola as the club’s new manager after the dismissal of Arne Slot following a disappointing Premier League campaign.
The Reds announced Iraola’s arrival on Thursday, ending speculation over who would succeed Slot, whose tenure came to an abrupt end after Liverpool’s failed title defence and underwhelming performances throughout the 2025/26 season.
Although the club did not disclose details of the agreement, reports in the British media indicate that the 43-year-old has signed a two-year contract at Anfield.
Speaking after his appointment, Iraola expressed delight at the opportunity to lead one of football’s most iconic clubs.
“I am really excited because everyone knows Liverpool is a massive club and one of the biggest in the world,” he told the club’s official website.
“But when you get closer and understand more about the club, you realise how special it is. Liverpool is a club that naturally attracts you.”
Iraola arrives on Merseyside with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young managers. The former Bournemouth boss impressed many observers after guiding the Cherries to a remarkable sixth-place finish in the Premier League this season, securing the club’s first-ever qualification for European competition.
His success at Bournemouth followed managerial spells at Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, Mirandes and Cypriot club AEK Larnaca.
During his three years at Bournemouth, Iraola steadily improved the team’s fortunes, leading them to finishes of 12th, ninth and eventually sixth place in the league.
He also earned praise for developing young talents such as Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott while implementing an energetic, attacking style of football.
Liverpool supporters will hope Iraola can restore the aggressive, high-pressing brand of football that defined the successful reign of former manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Spaniard is widely known for encouraging his teams to attack with intensity, press opponents high up the pitch and play with relentless energy.
His appointment comes after criticism of Slot’s more conservative approach, which many fans believed contributed to Liverpool’s decline during the just-concluded season.
Notably, star forward recently called for a return to the club’s famous “heavy metal football,” a style synonymous with Klopp’s most successful years at Anfield.
Slot’s departure marks a dramatic fall from grace after a promising start to life at Liverpool.
The Dutch coach had succeeded Klopp in 2024 and enjoyed immediate success, guiding Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English league title in his first season, with Salah playing a key role by scoring 29 league goals.
However, the Reds struggled to maintain that momentum during the 2025/26 campaign.
A poor run of form from September onwards saw Liverpool slip out of the title race, ultimately finishing fifth in the Premier League and ending the season without silverware.
The campaign was further complicated by the tragic death of forward in a car accident last July, an event that reportedly had a profound impact on the squad.
Despite significant investment in new players, with the club spending around £450 million on transfers, results failed to improve consistently.
Reports also suggested tensions emerged between Slot and Salah, while supporters became increasingly frustrated by the team’s performances.
Iraola now faces the task of restoring Liverpool’s status among England’s elite after the club finished 25 points behind champions .
Born in Spain’s Basque region, Iraola enjoyed an illustrious playing career with Atletico Bilbao, making more than 500 appearances before ending his career in Major League Soccer with .
Now, Liverpool’s hierarchy and supporters will hope he can bring fresh ideas, renewed energy and sustained success back to one of football’s most storied clubs.
