Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes the arrival of Morgan Rogers will add a new dimension to his side, revealing plans to build his attack around the former Aston Villa star and England teammate Cole Palmer.
Rogers completed a £117 million move from Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge last week, reuniting with his childhood friend Palmer in what many Chelsea supporters hope will become one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking partnerships.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Sydney Super Cup pre-season clash against Western Sydney Wanderers, Alonso said Rogers was the ideal player to strengthen his squad and insisted the pair have all the qualities needed to thrive together.
“In that position we needed an important player and I’m sure there were not many better options than Morgan Rogers,” Alonso said.
The Spaniard noted that Rogers’ familiarity with Palmer and several members of the Chelsea squad would help him settle quickly and make an immediate impact.
“I think it means a lot to everyone and for the players that are already here as well. They have a good feeling and they are looking forward to having him.
“You need players who can have that almost instant impact and I’m sure Morgan won’t need much time to adapt to the club, the system and his team-mates.
“That was the idea, to get a top player, and Morgan is one of them.”
Alonso also revealed that he already has a tactical blueprint for integrating Rogers and Palmer into the same starting XI, expressing confidence that their chemistry can unlock opposition defences.
“I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well,” he said.
The Chelsea boss explained that striking the right balance in midfield and attack would be crucial to making the Blues more competitive in all phases of play.
“We need to have a good mix. If we get that balance right and those special players in the right positions, with good control, then we will be more competitive with and without the ball.”
Insightlinks gathered that the prospect of Rogers lining up alongside Palmer has generated excitement among Chelsea fans, with both players renowned for their creativity, close control and ability to operate across multiple attacking positions. Their long-standing friendship and understanding on and off the pitch are also expected to ease Rogers’ transition and strengthen Chelsea’s attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season.
