Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United for pre-season preparations after completing a productive loan spell at Barcelona, bringing to an end a season that helped revive his career in Spain.
The England forward, who joined the La Liga champions on loan from United last summer with an option to make the move permanent, rediscovered his form under Hansi Flick, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. His standout moments included a decisive free-kick in El Clásico that helped Barcelona secure the league title.
Despite his impressive return of 28 goal involvements and his desire to remain at Camp Nou, Barcelona opted against activating the reported €30 million buy option. Instead, the Catalan club strengthened the same position by signing Anthony Gordon, while also prioritising other transfer targets as part of its long-term squad planning.
In a farewell message posted on his X account on Thursday, Rashford thanked Barcelona for what he described as an unforgettable experience and wished the club success in the new campaign.
“I’m extremely grateful to everyone at the club for turning my time here into such a positive and unforgettable experience. I’ve loved every moment and will carry those special memories with me.
“Wishing the club and all the fans the very best of luck and massive success this season,” Rashford wrote.
The 28-year-old now returns to Old Trafford, where he will begin pre-season with Manchester United as questions remain over his long-term future.
A product of United’s academy, Rashford will be hoping his impressive spell in Spain serves as a springboard to revive his career, although speculation over a possible permanent move away from the club continues ahead of the new Premier League season.
