Super Eagles veteran player, Ahmed Musa has expressed his deep sorrow and outrage over the recent bloodshed in Benue State, where numerous civilians lost their lives.
The 32-year-old forward, who recently featured for his boyhood club Kano Pillars in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League season, condemned the violence in a strongly worded statement shared on his official social media platforms.
“Another wave of heartbreaking killings in Benue. How many more lives must be lost before real action is taken? We can’t keep condemning violence and then moving on. Don’t wait until it happens close to home or to someone you know — speak out now.
“To our leaders: governance is not just for election season. We need consistent action, not seasonal appearances. We demand more. We deserve better. Benue deserves peace. Nigeria deserves better. Sincere condolences to those who lost their lives in the process and to their families, may Allah grant you the fortitude to bear the loss,” Musa wrote.
The footballer’s statement is coming after a series of reactions to the mass killings in Benue State, where several people were reportedly killed in Guma Local Government Area in what has been described as a two-day rampage by suspected herders.
Local leaders claim the actual death toll may be more than 100, with entire families wiped out and some victims reportedly burned alive.
President Bola Tinubu has confirmed plans for an official visit and has directed all security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peace in the area.
“The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing. We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is now enough. I have directed the security agencies to act decisively and arrest perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides of the conflict and prosecute them,” Tinubu said.
“This is the time for Governor Alia to act as a statesman and immediately lead the process of dialogue and reconciliation that will bring peace to Benue.”
The violence has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding that a state of emergency be declared in Benue State.
