Citing years of hardship and neglect under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), retired police officers across Nigeria have announced a coordinated, nationwide protest set for July 21, 2025.

The demonstration billed as the “Mother of All Peaceful Protests” calls for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force from the CPS.

The announcement came via a statement from the Kaduna State chapter of the Union of Retired Police Officers, signed by Retired CSP Mannir M. Lawal Zaria (Chairman) and Retired ASP Danlami Maigamo (Vice Chairman), following their monthly meeting at the Police Officers’ Mess in Kaduna.

The retirees argue that the CPS has brought about financial suffering, social stigma, and a rise in deaths and mental health struggles among former officers.

“We have no option but to embark on another peaceful protest… on July 21, 2025,” the union stated.

Protests are scheduled to occur simultaneously in all 36 states, with organizers emphasizing a strictly nonviolent approach.

“As law-abiding citizens, we will continue to advocate peacefully until our voices are heard.”

The group referenced an earlier protest held from February 24 to March 3, 2025, at the National Assembly, during which they submitted petitions to five key officials, including members of legislative committees and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS).

They claim no meaningful response has been received particularly concerning the outcome of a public hearing on the Police Pension Board Bill held on November 19, 2024.

Reiterating their commitment to peaceful advocacy, the union distanced itself from any groups promoting violence.

“The silence from the authorities is deafening, but we remain committed to lawful engagement,” the statement concluded.
