Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with a dramatic 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in Atlanta on Saturday, despite finishing the match with just nine men. Goals from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele secured the win in a thrilling clash that saw tempers flare, red cards shown, and a serious injury to Bayern star Jamal Musiala.
PSG’s triumph came despite late dismissals for defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez. The win also ended Bayern’s four-match winning streak against the Parisians, including a narrow 1-0 Champions League victory last November.
A poignant minute of silence was held before kickoff in memory of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who both died in a tragic car accident on Thursday. The emotional moment resonated especially with PSG, who had five Portuguese players in their squad, including starters Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Nuno Mendes.
Coach Luis Enrique started Ballon d’Or contender Dembele on the bench as he continued his recovery from a muscle injury, while Bayern’s Musiala returned from a calf issue to take his place in the starting XI.
Held at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the encounter lived up to its billing as a heavyweight showdown, with both sides displaying fast-paced, attacking football. Early chances fell to PSG’s Desire Doue and Bayern’s Michael Olise, while Donnarumma and Neuer both showcased their goalkeeping prowess with several superb saves.
A disallowed goal by Dayot Upamecano for offside and a near miss from Harry Kane kept the game finely balanced. However, the match took a grim turn just before halftime when Musiala suffered a horrific ankle injury after a collision with Donnarumma, leaving the young German in visible agony and the PSG keeper shaken.
PSG pushed forward after the break, with Neuer pulling off a world-class save to deny Barcola in a one-on-one situation. Dembele was introduced with 20 minutes remaining to help tip the balance, and nearly did so when he intercepted a loose ball from Neuer, only for his effort to trickle wide.
The breakthrough finally came in the 76th minute when Harry Kane lost possession and PSG capitalized. Doue found space on the edge of the area and drilled a low shot past Neuer at the near post.
Bayern’s hopes were briefly lifted after Pacho received a red card for a dangerous tackle on Goretzka. Moments later, Kane had the ball in the net, but again from an offside position. PSG’s Hernandez was then sent off for an elbow, reducing the French side to nine men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, PSG held firm and sealed the win in added time. Dembele, after a dazzling run from Achraf Hakimi, calmly slotted home the second goal and honored Diogo Jota with a signature video game-style celebration.
PSG will now face either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final on Wednesday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
