The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has commenced the announcement of results from the July 12 Local Government elections, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) taking a commanding lead in both chairmanship and councillorship races.
The elections, conducted peacefully across 13,325 polling units in the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), were characterized by low voter turnout but minimal disruptions. A total of 57 Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship positions and 376 Councillorship seats were contested.
Out of 19 registered political parties, 15 participated in the elections. The APC was the only party to field candidates in all available positions. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contested in 45 councils and 259 wards, while the Labour Party (LP) had candidates in 22 LGAs and 130 wards. Other parties, including the ZLP, AAC, AA, and YPP, contested fewer seats.
In Lagos Island, APC’s Taiwo Oyekan won the chairmanship seat with 28,385 votes, defeating PDP’s Ajibade Olusegun, who polled 1,271 votes. In Amuwo-Odofin, Prince Lanre Sanusi (PLS) of the APC secured a landslide victory with 24,926 votes, beating LP’s Engr. Seyi Ipinlaye, who managed 1,962 votes. Sanusi’s victory follows a robust grassroots campaign.
In Agege, APC’s Tunde Azeez, popularly known as “Disco,” was declared winner with 31,503 votes. His closest rivals from the APM and ZLP trailed with 86 and 10 votes respectively.
APC’s Yaba LCDA Chairmanship candidate, Adebayo Adefuye, described the electoral process as smooth and credible. After casting his vote, he unveiled his agenda, “Yaba tuntun” (New Yaba), promising transformative leadership. He also expressed support for the Federal Government’s push for local government financial autonomy.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement titled “Thank You, Lagos For Peaceful Local Government Elections,” praised Lagosians for their orderly participation and reaffirmed the importance of democratic engagement.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all Lagosians who came out today to perform their civic duty. You have shown that democracy thrives when citizens participate actively in elections,” he stated.
He urged candidates to remain calm as result collation continues and emphasized the importance of peaceful participation as the state looks ahead to the 2027 general elections.
The governor also commended security agencies, electoral officials, and the media for their professionalism and role in ensuring a peaceful and credible election.
As LASIEC continues result announcements, APC appears poised to retain its firm grip on grassroots governance across Lagos State.
