Alexander Isak has expressed deep appreciation to Newcastle United following his record-breaking £125 million ($167 million) transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.
The 25-year-old Swedish striker sealed a six-year deal with Arne Slot’s Premier League champions on Monday, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over his future. Isak had pushed for the move by refusing to play in pre-season and missing Newcastle’s first three league fixtures, a stance that led to frustration among fans who turned against him.
During their weekend clash against Leeds United, Newcastle supporters chanted: “We don’t care about Isak. He don’t care about me, all we care about is NUFC.”
Despite the sour ending, Isak leaves St James’ Park with an impressive record of 54 goals in 86 league appearances. He was also instrumental in helping Newcastle win the League Cup earlier this year, their first major trophy in 56 years.
Taking to Instagram, the Sweden international paid tribute to the club and its supporters: “I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared. Together, we made history and restored the club to where it belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey. Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”
Newcastle confirmed the transfer in a brief statement: “Newcastle can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
To fill the void left by Isak, the Magpies signed Germany forward Nick Woltemade and DR Congo striker Yoane Wissa before the transfer window closed.
