The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old commercial bus driver, Osabohien Ogieva, in connection with the death of his 32-year-old girlfriend, Joy Jerome, in what has been described as a tragic and disturbing incident.
The incident occurred in Ikpe community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The lifeless body of the woman was discovered on January 10, 2026, lying by the roadside near a river.
Confirming the arrest on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Eno Ikoedem, said operatives of the Idogbo Police Division swiftly responded to a distress call after the body was found. The deceased was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was confirmed dead before her remains were deposited at the mortuary.
According to the police, investigations revealed that Joy Jerome, a resident of the Upper Sakponba area of Benin City, was in a romantic relationship with the suspect. Further findings led to the arrest of Ogieva, who reportedly confessed to having a disagreement with the deceased on January 9, 2026, while conveying her in his commercial bus.
The police alleged that following the dispute, the suspect abandoned the woman’s body near a river in Ikpe community and went into hiding. Investigators also disclosed that Ogieva later contacted the victim’s family, claiming he had not seen her for several days, a move police described as suspicious.
SP Ikoedem said the suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
The Edo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for victims of violent crimes and urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
