The Kebbi State Police Command has bolstered security presence in Bui District of Arewa Local Government Area following a deadly cattle rustling attack that claimed 33 lives.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, disclosed that additional security personnel and operational resources had been deployed to the affected communities in synergy with the military and other security agencies.

He explained that continuous area domination patrols were being carried out to restore stability and forestall further violence in the district.

“The Command deeply regrets the loss of thirty-three innocent lives and extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Arewa community,” the statement noted.

The police said preliminary investigations indicated that suspected Lakurawa militants invaded Bui District on February 18 to rustle cattle. The attackers were reportedly believed to have entered the area from neighbouring Gudu Local Government Area.

Residents of Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago were said to have mobilised in response to the incursion, resulting in a deadly clash.

The Command stressed that confrontations involving heavily armed criminal groups require coordinated security intervention and cautioned residents against engaging such elements directly.

“Members of the public are urged to promptly report suspicious movements through established security channels rather than confront armed criminals, as such actions pose grave risks,” Usman warned.

Earlier reports had suggested that at least 34 people were feared dead after gunmen carried out coordinated daytime attacks on several communities in Arewa LGA, sparking panic across Kebbi North Senatorial District.

Security operatives have since commenced targeted operations to track down and apprehend those responsible, block possible escape routes and strengthen early warning systems.

The police urged residents to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts intensify to restore lasting peace in the affected communities.
