The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has urged candidates and parents to report cases where qualified applicants are denied admission despite meeting requirements in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
The Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, made the call during an interview on Good Morning Nigeria, a programme on the Nigerian Television Authority.
Oloyede advised candidates who are confident in their scores and eligibility to formally protest through the appropriate channels, stressing that the admission process is now transparent and merit-based.
“If you are sure of yourself… and you know that you ought to be admitted and you are not admitted, protest to us because CAPS has made everything easy,” he said.
CAPS Ensures Transparency
He highlighted the role of the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) in eliminating manipulation and ensuring fairness in admissions.
According to him, CAPS has significantly improved transparency since its introduction, noting that there have been no major issues with the system since 2017.
Oloyede also criticised the persistence of malpractice, attributing it to a mindset among some parents who believe illegal shortcuts are the only way to secure admission for their children.
“People are so daring… they believe there is no other way,” he said, adding that many who approached him for help were eventually admitted without any interference.
Crackdown on Admission Fraud
The registrar further disclosed that JAMB has intensified efforts to curb fraud in direct entry admissions by strengthening verification processes.
He revealed that the board has detected and prevented multiple cases of certificate forgery, including instances involving foreign institutions.
“This year… we have arrested… 77, but we did more prevention,” he said.
Oloyede explained that results from programmes such as JUPEB and IJMB are now thoroughly checked at the point of entry, making it difficult to manipulate the system.
He added that degrees submitted for admission are now verified directly with awarding institutions to ensure authenticity.
The JAMB boss reaffirmed the board’s commitment to maintaining integrity in Nigeria’s admission process, urging stakeholders to rely on due process rather than illegal means.
