The Ghana Football Association has named experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the national team, the Black Stars, as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released on Monday, the GFA confirmed that the decision was taken by its Executive Council in collaboration with key stakeholders. Queiroz is expected to assume duties immediately, with the tournament set to kick off on June 11, 2026, across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The football body expressed confidence in the 73-year-old’s wealth of experience, particularly at the World Cup level. Over the years, Queiroz has managed teams at four different editions of the tournament, guiding South Africa to qualification in 2002, leading Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and coaching Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.

His résumé also includes high-profile roles with top sides and national teams across the globe, having worked with clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as national teams including Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar.

Queiroz’s appointment follows the departure of former coach Otto Addo, who left his role on March 31 after a disappointing run of results. The Black Stars had suffered multiple defeats, including losses to Germany and Austria in friendly matches, and also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations despite boasting talents like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing tougher tests against England and Croatia in what promises to be a challenging group stage.
