Scotland made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after defeating Haiti 1-0 in their Group C opener, with John McGinn writing his name into the history books.
The midfielder scored Scotland’s first World Cup goal in 28 years as Steve Clarke’s side secured all three points at Boston Stadium and moved to the top of the group.
Following Brazil’s earlier 1-1 draw with Morocco, victory gave Scotland an early advantage in the standings and boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Scotland started brightly and nearly opened the scoring through Scott McTominay, whose effort struck the post. Moments later, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 28th minute.
After Che Adams was initially denied, McGinn reacted quickest to the rebound and saw his deflected effort find the back of the net, sparking huge celebrations among the travelling Scottish supporters.
The goal marked Scotland’s first at a FIFA World Cup since their appearance at France 1998.
Haiti, playing in the tournament for the first time since 1974, showed determination and created moments of danger despite falling behind.
Shortly after McGinn’s opener, Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn nearly gifted Haiti an equaliser after spilling an effort from Carlens Arcus, but his defenders reacted quickly to clear the danger.
Scotland continued to push for a second goal, with Ben Doak forcing a defensive block after connecting with an Andy Robertson delivery.
McGinn later missed an opportunity to make the result more comfortable when he dragged his shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Haiti refused to give up and almost found a late equaliser with five minutes remaining, but Frantzdy Pierrot headed narrowly wide from close range.
In the end, Scotland held firm to secure a vital victory and move to the summit of Group C.
