The Premier League will return this weekend after a 19-day international break, with clubs facing the challenge of managing players returning from national-team duty and dealing with fresh injury concerns.

The 2026/27 campaign was paused after Matchweek 5 following a revised FIFA international calendar that combined the traditional September and October international windows into one extended break.

The international window is scheduled to end on Tuesday, October 6, with Premier League action resuming on Saturday, October 10.

The long break has given clubs time to recover and prepare for the next phase of the campaign, but it has also brought fresh fitness concerns for several teams, with some players returning from international duty injured.

Liverpool are among the clubs facing major concerns ahead of their return to league action. Sweden forward Alexander Isak left the national team camp with a thigh problem, while Netherlands international Cody Gakpo returned to Liverpool after suffering an ankle injury.

Isak’s fitness will be closely monitored ahead of Liverpool’s heavyweight clash with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

Arsenal also have an injury concern after Germany international Kai Havertz returned to the club for treatment following a muscle problem sustained during the international break.

The Gunners will begin Matchweek 6 at home to unbeaten Leeds United on Saturday, looking to recover from their 3-0 defeat away to Brighton before the international pause.

Leeds, meanwhile, have made an impressive return to the top flight under Daniel Farke and are among the five teams yet to suffer a defeat this season.

Manchester City will enter the weekend as league leaders with a perfect record from their opening five matches, while Liverpool have nine points from the same number of games.

Their meeting at Anfield is expected to be one of the biggest fixtures of the weekend, with City’s Erling Haaland and Liverpool’s Isak also among the league’s leading scorers. Haaland currently has five goals, while Isak has four.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Chelsea will host Bournemouth, while Manchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford in another potentially significant fixture as both sides seek to improve their fortunes.

Aston Villa will face Brentford, Ipswich Town will host Fulham, while Sunderland will take on Brighton.

Sunday’s other fixtures will see Crystal Palace face Nottingham Forest and Hull City host Everton.

The weekend will conclude on Monday when Coventry City welcome Newcastle United, with both teams looking to build momentum after the international break.

With the extended international window now coming to an end, attention will shift back to the Premier League, where clubs must balance the demands of a busy domestic schedule with the fitness of players who have travelled and competed for their countries.
