Digital news platforms and social media were on Tuesday awash with viral story of a king-sized bed installed in the office of the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State.
This was after a resolution by members of the Academic Board on Friday, suspending the the Rector, Dr John Taiwo Adekolawole as the Chairman of the board over 21 allegations all bordering on disobedience of the board’s resolutions.
However, according to a statement obtained by InsightMedia, the Rector was only suspended as the Chairman of the Academic Board but not as Rector as reported by some Media outlets.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic of the institution, Nurudeen Masopa, while addressing Journalists after the crisis that engulfed the campus on Friday, revealed that “Two, the desecration of the highly respected office of the rector with the creation of a bedroom furnished with a king-size bed which has made it possible for him to be sleeping at work.”
Several news media went ahead to use a picture of a room with bed as the office of the Rector.
Sources who work in the Administrative Building disclosed that the arrangements in the Rector’s office differ from what’s being circulated in the media.
When asked if there were traces of new structural arrangements, the source simply said “if that will happen, there will be some engineers who will work on the building and this is where I work, I come here everyday, there’s nothing like that.”
Speaking with InsightMedia, the President of Students Union Government of the institution, Kazeem Ajibade described the picture circulated online as ”fake”, adding that it doesn’t represent the office of the Rector.
He added that “the office of the Rector I know doesn’t look like that and has no bed in it. However, there may be adjoining rooms anywhere that I don’t know, because as architect, when we are designing some executive offices, we do have some inner rooms for convenience of the executive officer.
“Be that as it may, I don’t think that should be reason for our lecturers to put the image of the school in bad light again.” Ajibade told our Correspondent.
When our Correspondent sought confirmation from the Chairman of ASUP, Comrade Masopa, he said the issue allegation of king-sized bed didn’t emanate from the union, he therefore directed our Correspondent to the Chairman of committee of deans, Dr A. S. Amusan.
Dr Amusan said the viral picture is not his office. He said the picture is looks like an hotel room.
He said, “that’s not his office. You know internet may be deceitful. Although he has a bed in one of the adjoining rooms in his office.”
The Rector’s Office
The office of the Rector is located at the topmost floor of the Administrative Building is a large space decorated with different curtains, sources told our Correspondent.
“The tiles on the floor is completely cream in colour with no stripe as opposed to what is seen in the viral picture. Only the toilet tiles, which is brown is different from the others.
Another credible source, who is also a staff of the Polytechnic, gave our Correspondent pictures of the Rector’s office as it’s arranged on Tuesday.
