Sunderland have secured their long-awaited return to the Premier League, clinching promotion with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

After trailing to Tyrese Campbell’s first-half strike, Regis Le Bris’ side staged a dramatic comeback. Eliezer Mayenda leveled the score late in the match before Tommy Watson fired home a stunning stoppage-time winner to seal the deal.

Watson’s heroics capped an unforgettable finale in what’s often dubbed the richest game in football, with promotion expected to bring in around £200 million ($270 million) in additional revenue. Sunderland’s triumph also sets up a mouthwatering return of the Tyne-Wear derby, as they prepare to face rivals Newcastle United next season.

The promotion marks Sunderland’s return to the top flight for the first time since 2017, following a turbulent period that included four seasons in League One. Despite entering the play-offs on the back of five consecutive losses, the Black Cats showed remarkable resilience.

Their path to the final was equally dramatic, Dan Ballard’s last-minute extra-time header against Coventry in the semi-final secured a 3-2 aggregate win, keeping their dream alive.

For manager Regis Le Bris, who took charge last year after a relegation campaign with Lorient in France’s Ligue 1, the achievement highlights a remarkable turnaround.

In contrast, Sheffield United’s Wembley woes continued. The Blades remain winless at the iconic venue for over a century, suffering their fourth Championship play-off final defeat and 10th overall failed attempt to secure promotion via the play-offs. Despite finishing third in the league, 14 points ahead of Sunderland, United’s advantage meant little when it mattered most.
