Besiktas have parted ways with head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær following the team’s elimination from the UEFA Conference League play-offs.

The Turkish giants confirmed the decision on Thursday after a 2-0 defeat to Swiss side Lausanne ended their hopes of playing European football this season. The loss capped a series of poor performances that left the board with little choice but to act.

Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano first broke the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been sacked by Besiktas with immediate effect.”

Solskjær, 52, was appointed in January and guided Besiktas to a fourth-place finish in the Süper Lig last season. However, his inability to improve results in the new campaign, combined with the club’s European exit, increased pressure on him and ultimately sealed his fate.

In an official statement, Besiktas announced: “Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been terminated following a decision made at a board meeting. Chairman Serdal Adalı thanked Solskjær for his contributions and service to the club.”

The Istanbul side have already begun searching for a replacement. Former Borussia Dortmund player and coach, Nuri Şahin, is among the early names linked to the role, though the club has yet to make a formal announcement.

Besiktas fans and stakeholders will now await news of who will lead the team forward as they attempt to rebuild momentum in both domestic and international competitions.
