Adebayo-Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has debunked reports suggesting he has stepped down from office, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The denial comes amid heightened political speculation, particularly following a Federal Government directive requiring appointees with ambitions for the 2027 elections to resign.

Reacting through his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, the minister dismissed the reports in a WhatsApp exchange with journalists, insisting that Adelabu remains fully focused on his duties.

“The news of the minister’s resignation is fake. There is no truth to it,” Tunji stated, adding that images of a purported resignation letter circulating online had been clearly marked as “fake news.”

The rumours gained momentum after recent remarks by the minister, which many interpreted as hinting at a possible political move.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja last week, Adelabu stopped short of confirming any resignation plans but acknowledged the timeline for political decisions ahead of the next general elections.

“For now, my priority is the job I am doing as Minister of Power. I am focused on addressing the challenges in the power sector,” he said, stressing his commitment to improving electricity supply across the country.

While reaffirming his dedication to his current role, Adelabu left the door open regarding his political future, noting that any decision about contesting the Oyo State governorship would be made in due time.

The situation comes in the wake of a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive, conveyed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws and maintaining fairness in the political process.

Adelabu’s position has attracted particular attention due to growing speculation about his possible governorship ambition in Oyo State, although no official declaration has been made.
