A yet-to-be-identified driver was reportedly shot dead on Sunday by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service along the Osogbo–Iwo Road in Osun State.
The incident was said to have occurred around 10 a.m. at the Onibueja area of Ido-Osun, near a police checkpoint on the busy road.
According to a video obtained by PUNCH Online, the victim’s vehicle was heavily riddled with bullets. The footage also showed residents gathering at the scene, expressing anger and calling for an investigation into the shooting.
Witnesses claimed that the officers involved were dressed in plain clothes and had allegedly been chasing the driver from the Iwo end of the road before the fatal shooting occurred.
A resident of the area, who identified himself only as Sunday for security reasons, said the development quickly drew a large crowd.
“The man was driving towards the Osogbo side from Iwo when some security operatives in mufti began shooting at his car,” he said. “He died right there behind the steering wheel. The vehicle was full of bullet holes, and people rushed to the scene. It happened very close to a police roadblock.”
He added that the shooters were not in uniform, which initially made it difficult for residents to determine which security agency they belonged to.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that a fatal shooting had taken place.
Ojelabi said preliminary findings indicated that the suspects involved were operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
“The incident happened, but those who allegedly fired the shots are Customs operatives,” he said. “We have arrested two people in connection with the incident. A detailed briefing will be given to the press shortly.”
Authorities are expected to launch further investigations as residents continue to demand accountability over the killing.
