FC Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is weighing his options ahead of a crucial La Liga derby against Espanyol, following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
With Barcelona currently seven points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table, Flick is considering rotating his squad for Saturday’s derby to keep players fresh for the decisive second leg against Atletico next week.
However, the decision is far from straightforward. Madrid, managed by Álvaro Arbeloa, face Girona FC and could close the gap to four points with a win, increasing the pressure on Barcelona to secure maximum points in the derby.
Speaking ahead of the match, Flick acknowledged the importance of balancing both competitions. “The derby is very important for us, but we also have to consider what lies ahead. We’ll assess our options carefully,” he said.
Barcelona risk suffering their first league defeat at the Camp Nou since its reopening if they underestimate their struggling city rivals, even as they aim to overturn the deficit against Atletico in the return leg.
Several fringe players, including Ronald Araújo, Marc Casadó, and Roony Bardghji, could be handed starting roles against an Espanyol side that has struggled for form in 2026.
Barcelona will also monitor the fitness of key midfielder Pedri, who was substituted at half-time against Atletico due to a minor issue. Flick is hopeful he will be available for upcoming fixtures.
There is further encouragement with Frenkie de Jong returning to training after a hamstring injury, while Gavi impressed off the bench in midweek and could see more playing time.
Meanwhile, Atletico coach Diego Simeone is also expected to rotate his squad when they face Sevilla FC, with his focus firmly on securing progress in the Champions League.
With a high-stakes European clash looming and the La Liga title race still alive, Barcelona must carefully navigate their fixture schedule to avoid setbacks on both fronts.
