Bernardo Silva will leave Manchester City at the end of the season when his contract expires, the Premier League champions confirmed on Thursday, bringing an end to a highly successful nine-year spell at the Etihad.

In a statement, the club praised the 31-year-old captain for his “incalculable” contribution during what it described as the most successful period in its history.

Silva joined City from AS Monaco in 2017 for £43 million and quickly became a key figure under manager Pep Guardiola. Over the years, he made more than 450 appearances, scoring 76 goals and providing 77 assists.

During his time at the club, Silva won 15 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League crown, and this season’s League Cup. He also played a crucial role in City’s historic 2022/23 treble-winning campaign, which saw them clinch the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.

The Portuguese midfielder recently entered the club’s top 10 all-time appearance list, surpassing notable former players such as David Silva, Paul Power, and Willie Donachie.

“Bernardo will now focus on ensuring his time at City ends with more silverware,” the club said, noting that Guardiola’s side remains in contention for both the Premier League title and the FA Cup this season.

Confirming the news in an emotional post on Instagram, Silva reflected on his journey since arriving in Manchester.

“When I arrived nine years ago, I was chasing a childhood dream to succeed and achieve great things,” he wrote. “This club and this city gave me far more than I ever imagined.”

He highlighted some of the team’s historic achievements, including the Centurions season, domestic quadruple, treble, and four consecutive league titles, describing them as memories he will always cherish.

Silva also expressed gratitude to the club, his teammates, and fans for their unwavering support, adding that he would always remain a City supporter.

“As I prepare to say goodbye in a few months, I leave not just a club where we won so much, but a city where I built my family,” he said. “Let’s enjoy these final weeks together and fight for everything still ahead this season.”
