The Federal Government has announced the commencement of applications for the second phase of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, aimed at equipping Nigerians with practical skills and improving employment opportunities.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, made the announcement on Monday via his X handle, describing the initiative as a key part of the government’s drive to strengthen human capital development.

According to the minister, the programme attracted massive interest during its initial rollout, with over 1.3 million Nigerians applying.

He said the response highlights the growing need for vocational skills and their importance in driving both personal growth and national economic development.

Alausa disclosed that the application portal officially opened at 4:00pm (WAT) on April 13, 2026, encouraging Nigerians of all ages to take advantage of the opportunity.

“We are calling on every Nigerian, young or old, who has a dream and a vision for a better life to sign up. With TVET, you can build your own future,” he said.

The programme offers two learning pathways: A six-month Short-Term Certificate for beginners and a one-year Vocational Education and Innovation track for those with prior knowledge or informal training

Applicants are required to provide a valid National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN). Those applying for the advanced track may also submit proof of prior learning or basic educational qualifications.

Successful candidates will enjoy fully funded tuition, monthly stipends, hands-on training, and nationally recognised certifications upon completion.

In addition, graduates will receive start-up support and access to business loans to help them establish their own ventures.

Training will cover several fields, including electrical installation, welding and fabrication, digital media, automobile repairs, fashion design, agriculture, and renewable energy.

The programme will be delivered through training centres spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including federal and state technical colleges as well as accredited private institutions.

The TVET initiative is part of the economic and skills development strategy of the administration of Bola Tinubu, aimed at reducing unemployment and strengthening Nigeria’s workforce.

The government has also been engaging international partners, including stakeholders in the United Kingdom, to expand collaboration and improve the quality of vocational training in the country.

With applications now open, the programme is expected to attract another wave of Nigerians seeking to gain practical skills and improve their economic prospects.
