The World Institute for Peace (WIP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene in what it described as the prolonged detention of the Commander-General of the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), Mr. Osatimehin Joshua Wole.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Osogbo, the Executive Director of WIP, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, expressed concern over what he termed actions linked to the Office of the National Security Adviser, under the watch of Nuhu Ribadu.
Omotoyosi said the continued detention of the NFSS commander and some of his colleagues for about 15 days raises questions about due process and could discourage citizens from volunteering to support national security efforts.
“The individuals have dedicated themselves, on a voluntary basis, to supporting security operations across Nigeria, especially in forest regions prone to banditry and kidnapping,” he said.
While acknowledging President Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture particularly the approval of the Forest Guard initiative in May 2025, the group stressed the need for fairness and transparency in handling the NFSS matter.
The organisation described the NFSS as a critical grassroots security structure with over 70,000 volunteers nationwide, noting that its operations have helped bridge the gap between local communities and formal security agencies, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
WIP also urged the President to direct the immediate release of the NFSS commander to enable him continue his “outstanding voluntary service,” warning that the situation could erode public trust in security institutions if not addressed promptly.
In addition, the group called for presidential assent to the NFSS Bill already passed by the National Assembly, stating that it would provide a legal framework for the organisation and improve coordination within Nigeria’s security system.
“Nigeria’s security challenges require inclusive and community-driven approaches. Volunteer-based initiatives like the NFSS are essential complements to conventional structures,” Omotoyosi added.
The group further appealed to relevant authorities to engage transparently with the NFSS leadership and protect citizens contributing voluntarily to national security.
It also called on the international community and development partners to support efforts aimed at strengthening community-based security and democratic accountability in Nigeria.
WIP warned that failure to release the detained commander could lead to a peaceful protest at the National Assembly and the Presidential Villa.
The organisation, however, expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership, urging swift action to reinforce public confidence and promote national unity.
