Nigerian disc jockey and entrepreneur, Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has revealed that she receives marriage proposals daily, even from people outside her fan base.
The music star made the revelation during an interview with Marie Claire, published on Thursday, where she spoke about her academic journey, career, philanthropy and her views on marriage.
Cuppy, who has earned degrees from New York University, the University of Oxford and King’s College London, joked that pursuing more academic qualifications has become her way of responding to family questions about when she plans to get married.
“I call it avoidance of marriage,” she said with a laugh.
“Every time my grandma asks, ‘Where’s your husband?’, I show her a new certificate.”
Despite the frequent questions about her marital status, the billionaire heiress disclosed that offers of marriage are far from scarce.
“I get marriage proposals every day. And I’m not even talking about fans.
“Everyone is apparently trying to help me when I have not asked to be helped,” she said.
Beyond her successful music career, Cuppy said she is deeply passionate about education and believes learning has helped her gain a better understanding of the industries in which she operates.
“With entertainment, I have never just wanted to participate. I want to understand who controls what and learn as much about their processes as possible,” she explained.
The entertainer also reflected on a memorable moment involving her father, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, when someone recognised him at an airport as “Cuppy’s dad.”
According to her, the incident marked a special moment in their relationship, as she is more commonly identified as Femi Otedola’s daughter.
“Recently, my dad told me that someone stopped him at the airport to take a picture because they recognised him as ‘Cuppy’s dad’,” she recalled.
“It made me feel good because normally, I’m Femi’s daughter, but on that day, to that person, he was my dad.”
Cuppy also highlighted her commitment to philanthropy, stressing that meaningful impact goes beyond simply giving money.
She distinguished philanthropy from charity, saying while charity often involves offering immediate help, philanthropy focuses on creating sustainable solutions to societal challenges.
“Charity is just giving because you want to,” she said.
“Being a philanthropist, though, is about making a lasting difference. It’s about long-lasting results.”
Although questions about marriage continue to follow her, Cuppy suggested she is in no rush, humorously insisting that another academic degree remains her preferred response.
