The Federal Government has urged all radio stations in Nigeria to leverage their platforms to raise awareness about climate change and its impact on the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday in celebration of World Radio Day, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the crucial role radio plays in educating and informing communities.
“Through informative and educational programs, radio, like other vital media, can equip communities with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt to the changing climate and mitigate its effects,” Idris said.
He encouraged radio stations to partner with organizations and climate change experts to provide accurate and reliable information, through interviews with scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers. This, he said, would help enhance public understanding of the issue and contribute to sustainable solutions in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Minister also urged the environmental community to reflect on their actions and adopt simple lifestyle changes to combat climate change, such as reducing plastic usage, conserving energy, and promoting sustainable agriculture. These efforts, he noted, could make a significant impact over time.
“As Nigeria joins the world in celebrating the role of radio in fighting climate change, it is essential to remember that the effects of climate change transcend borders and are felt globally,” he added.
Idris called on Nigerians to collaborate with other nations in finding solutions to protect the planet for future generations.
He also congratulated UNESCO for initiating World Radio Day and encouraged the full utilization of radio’s power to make a positive impact on climate action.
