Liverpool are reportedly making significant strides in negotiations for a new contract with Mohamed Salah, with the Premier League leaders growing more confident that the Egyptian forward will remain at Anfield next season.
Salah, 32, is set to become a free agent at the end of this season, along with teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
While Alexander-Arnold has been strongly linked to a potential free transfer to Real Madrid, Van Dijk confirmed after Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Fulham on Sunday that discussions are progressing regarding a new contract for the club captain.
Though no agreement has been finalized yet, there is optimism that both Salah and Van Dijk will sign extensions to their current deals.
Salah is the Premier League’s top scorer this season with 27 goals and has netted 243 times in 394 appearances for Liverpool since joining the club from Roma in 2017. The forward has played a key role in Liverpool’s success, winning the Champions League and helping end a 30-year wait for an English top-flight title in 2020, among eight total trophies.
Despite speculation linking him to a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, the two-time African Footballer of the Year has consistently expressed his desire to stay at Liverpool.
In November, Salah suggested he was “probably more out than in” at Liverpool, and a month later indicated that a deal was still “far away.”
