Former Ekiti State Governor, Olusegun Oni, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political shift ahead of future elections in the state.

Oni completed his registration into the APC on Sunday at his country home in Ifaki Ekiti, where he was formally enrolled through the party’s ongoing electronic registration exercise.

Confirming the development on Monday in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State Coordinator of the APC e-registration exercise and Commissioner for Youth Development, Adesola Adedayo, described Oni’s defection as a major boost to the party’s growth and mobilisation efforts.

Adedayo said the former governor’s entry into the APC had further strengthened the party’s progressive family in Ekiti, noting that his participation underscored the success of the ongoing registration exercise.

Oni, who governed Ekiti State between 2007 and 2010 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the 2022 election.

Welcoming him into the APC, Adedayo described Oni as a seasoned and widely respected grassroots politician whose influence would add immense value to the party.

“Former Governor Segun Oni is a resourceful and popular leader. His decision to join the APC will further strengthen the party’s winning momentum,” he said.

The commissioner added that Oni’s defection signalled a major political realignment ahead of the 2026 Ekiti governorship election and the 2027 general elections, describing it as a “seismic shift” in the state’s political landscape.

Adedayo also noted that Oni’s grassroots appeal would help attract more supporters to the APC, especially at a time when the party is intensifying efforts to expand its membership base.
“He is well loved at the grassroots. Having someone of his calibre join us at this crucial period is a big plus for the party,” he stated.

He expressed satisfaction with the pace of the ongoing e-registration exercise, saying it reflected the party’s readiness for future electoral contests.

The commissioner urged APC leaders and members across Ekiti State to remain proactive and avoid complacency, stressing the need for sustained mobilisation to strengthen the party at the local level.

According to him, Oni’s registration came less than 24 hours after Governor Biodun Oyebanji revalidated his APC membership, further energising the party’s statewide mobilisation drive.
Adedayo reiterated that the e-registration exercise was vital for documenting members, strengthening party structures, and confirming loyalty ahead of elections.

“This exercise is critical to the success of our party and plays a key role in the re-election of Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the June 20 governorship election,” he added.
