Reality TV star and beauty influencer, Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has stirred reactions online after criticising Nigerians for what she described as deep-rooted discrimination among themselves.
Tacha made the remarks on Tuesday while reacting to the backlash faced by Tunde Onakoya over a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).
In her post, she argued that while many Nigerians are quick to condemn racism, they often overlook similar or worse behaviour within their own society.
“When I see Nigerians talk about racism, I just laugh. Because we’re some of the most discriminatory and segregating people to ever exist,” she wrote.
She added that although she has personally experienced racism, the level of criticism and hostility Nigerians direct at one another online can be even more intense.
The controversy began after Onakoya shared a video of himself playing chess in traditional attire at the open plaza outside the Louvre Museum. He described the moment as a milestone, claiming to be the first Nigerian to play chess at the location.
While many praised the cultural symbolism of the act, others questioned the claim, noting that the area is a public space and that there was no official confirmation to support such a “first.” Critics also argued that the act appeared informal rather than a structured or historic event.
Weighing in on the situation, Tacha commended Onakoya for how he handled the criticism, pointing out that he had previously faced intense online attacks.
According to her, it was encouraging to see him stand his ground this time.
She also took aim at what she described as habitual online trolls, saying they often react negatively to other people’s success.
“Sometimes when people see others succeeding and making real impact, they become bitter and resort to hate,” she added.
Her comments have since sparked conversations on social media about online behaviour, criticism, and the need for more support among Nigerians.
