Singer and pastor, Banky W, has shared how witnessing his wife, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, go through repeated failed IVF cycles became one of the most humbling moments of his life.
Speaking on the The Teju Babyface Show in an episode published on Thursday, he said the experience revealed a level of strength in his wife that he believes exceeds his own and has shaped his approach to their marriage.
“In our journey to having children, I’ve seen her endure things that would break people. I’ve seen her when we were trying to have Hezekiah and we were going through IVF cycle after IVF cycle and it wasn’t working and she would get back on her feet and inject herself with whatever they said,” he said.
Reflecting on the experience, Banky W noted that it changed his perspective on responsibilities at home, including tasks like cooking, which he now does without complaint.
“I’ve seen her put herself through. So is it now that I now say cooking is hard?” he said.
He added that the fertility journey was part of a broader pattern of sacrifice he has observed in his wife, including periods when she paused her acting career to focus on building their family.
“I’ve seen her put her career on pause in some seasons because we were trying to have children. I mean, you know, what more can you ask of a wife and a mother than that?” he said.
Banky W also described the period as one that strengthened their faith rather than weakening it.
“There’s certain difficult situations that I faced personally or that we faced as a couple that have drawn us even closer to God, like our wait for our children,” he said.
Adesua, who was present during the interview, acknowledged the challenges they faced as a couple.
“Has it been easy every time? No,” she said.
The singer further recounted how their relationship developed, noting that they spent about a year and a half as friends before officially dating, after which he proposed within a few months.
“I had never been in a relationship that had lasted a year before I met her technically when we got engaged. I was toasting but she was not roasting for almost a year and a half.
“But when we actually now officially dating, it was October 1st. I proposed to her in February. So we dated officially for four and a half months,” he said.
The couple welcomed their first son, Zaiah, in 2021 after publicly sharing their fertility struggles, and have since had a second son, Hezekiah.
