Egypt produced a remarkable second-half turnaround to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in their FIFA World Cup Group G clash at BC Place in Vancouver, recording the nation’s first-ever victory in World Cup history.

The Pharaohs had endured disappointing campaigns in their previous World Cup appearances and looked set for another frustrating outing after New Zealand struck first in the opening half.

The All Whites made a bright start and took the lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman rose highest from a corner to power home a header, exposing Egypt’s defensive marking.

Egypt struggled to find rhythm before the break, with Mohamed Salah unable to make a major impact as New Zealand carried their advantage into halftime.

However, the mood changed completely after the restart.

Whatever was said in the dressing room by head coach Hossam Hassan appeared to spark life into the Egyptian side as they returned with greater intensity and attacking purpose.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko found space inside the box and headed home Mohamed Hany’s delivery to bring Egypt level.

The equaliser transformed the game.

Just nine minutes later, Egypt completed the comeback through their captain and star man Mohamed Salah. Combining brilliantly with Ziko during a quick attacking move, Salah calmly finished to put the Pharaohs ahead for the first time in the match.

Egypt sealed the victory in the 82nd minute when substitute Trezeguet connected with Salah’s corner kick and headed beyond goalkeeper Max Crocombe.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among Egyptian supporters as the Pharaohs claimed a landmark first World Cup win and moved within touching distance of a place in the knockout rounds.
