Nigerian singer Omawumi has weighed in on the ongoing debate about modern relationships, stating that the idea of love being transactional is nothing new.

Speaking in a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria, the ‘Bottom Belle’ crooner explained that relationships have always involved some form of exchange, although she believes expectations have evolved over time.

According to her, what it took to impress a romantic partner in the past was far less demanding compared to today, largely due to changing times and economic realities.

“Love has always been transactional. Women have always been demanding since the beginning of time,” she said. “Back then, you could impress your crush with simple things like ice cream and popcorn, but now it’s much more like an iPhone.”

Omawumi, however, argued that society often exaggerates this narrative by overlooking the role women also play in giving back within relationships.

She further suggested that many men who complain about the transactional nature of love may contribute to the situation themselves, especially when they pursue partners with more expensive tastes.

Her comments add to the broader conversation around relationships, expectations, and the impact of modern living on romance.
