Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has officially announced his departure from the club, ending a decade-long spell in North London. The South Korean forward made the announcement ahead of Spurs’ pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul, raising the prospect of a move to Major League Soccer, with LAFC reportedly leading the race for his signature.
Addressing the media before Sunday’s match, Son delivered the surprise statement: “Before we start, I just want to share that I’ve decided to leave the club this summer.
“Tottenham is supporting me in this decision, and it’s easily the toughest call I’ve made in my career. I feel I’ve accomplished everything I can here. Now, I need a new environment and a fresh challenge.”
Son joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and became a club icon over his ten-year tenure. He recently helped the team secure its first trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final. However, recent seasons have seen his role diminish due to injuries and inconsistent form, prompting his decision to seek regular playing time as he prepares for what may be his final FIFA World Cup with South Korea in 2026.
Reflecting on his journey, Son said: “I came to North London at 23, barely speaking English. Now I leave as a man. This club, the fans, everything has been a home to me. I have so many beautiful memories here. Ten years is a long time, and I believe now is the right moment for change.”
Speculation about Son’s future had been swirling since last summer, with few expecting him to extend his contract beyond 2025. His success in the Europa League only fueled speculation of a potential exit.
According to reports, Los Angeles FC have made a formal offer, and Son is said to be interested in the move—especially with the 2026 World Cup being hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The transfer would provide him with both consistent playing time and the ideal environment to prepare for the tournament.
Negotiations between Son’s camp and LAFC are ongoing, while interest from other clubs across Europe and beyond may intensify in the coming weeks. Sunday’s match in Seoul could mark Son’s final appearance in a Tottenham shirt.
