Nigerian music star, Tiwa Savage, has dismissed claims that Afrobeats is losing its global influence, insisting that the genre is stronger than ever.
Her response comes after several music executives, including Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N, suggested that Afrobeats was experiencing its weakest moment in two decades.
Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Tiwa confidently declared that Afrobeats is far from declining, emphasizing its growing dominance on global charts and concert tours.
According to her, the genre’s rise is even more remarkable given that it was built without major backing or proper industry infrastructure.
“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world,” she said. “We created it from nothing, no support, no structure, and not even belief from our own people at first.”
Tiwa also shared a personal reflection, revealing that she once felt uncomfortable identifying as African while growing up in London. However, she said the global success of Afrobeats has reshaped that perception, making her deeply proud of her heritage.
“I remember growing up in London and not being happy being African. But now, I’m so proud because of how far Afrobeats has come,” she noted.
The award-winning singer added that, despite doubts and predictions that Afrobeats would fade after its “15 minutes of fame,” the genre continues to thrive, filling stadiums and producing chart-topping hits.
“We’re still here and we’re not slowing down,” she said. “They may try to quiet us, but the music isn’t going anywhere. We are Africans, and we are unstoppable.”
