Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has played down claims that Nigeria’s national team relies solely on him, insisting the squad has enough quality and depth to succeed no matter who is on the pitch.

The Galatasaray forward spoke ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria’s three-time champions will be hoping to end their 12-year wait for another continental title.

Although Osimhen has been central to Nigeria’s recent successes, the Super Eagles have often struggled in matches he missed. This was particularly evident during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where the team failed to record a win in the five games played without him.

Despite this, the 26-year-old insists the Eagles are far from being a one-man team.

“I always try to give my best, but we have many talented players in this squad,” Osimhen told BBC Africa. “I’m just one of them. If some of us are not available, others can step in and do the job. That’s one of our strengths.”

With other attacking options such as Akor Adams, Paul Onuachu and Cyriel Dessers available, Osimhen expressed confidence that the team can still deliver goals and strong performances when it matters most.

Widely regarded as Africa’s top centre-forward, Osimhen also acknowledged the trust and support Nigerians have shown him over the years.

“I really appreciate the love and belief Nigerians have in me and my commitment to the national team,” he said.

The striker highlighted his work rate and the strong bond within the squad, describing the relationship among players as one built on mutual respect.

“I always try to run, fight, score goals and give everything for my teammates. I’m grateful to them for the support they give me, and we listen to one another. There’s a lot of respect in this team,” he added.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle will be hoping Osimhen stays fit throughout the tournament as Nigeria push for their first AFCON title since 2013.

The striker had earlier apologised to Nigerians for the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to DR Congo in the play-offs, promising that the AFCON campaign would be an opportunity for the team to redeem itself.
