England were forced to settle for a frustrating goalless draw against Ghana in their second Group L match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night at Boston Stadium.
Despite dominating possession and creating more attacking opportunities, the Three Lions could not find a breakthrough against a disciplined Ghanaian side determined to secure a valuable result.
The draw means England remain in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage with four points from two matches, but their hopes of finishing top of the group are still undecided heading into the final round of fixtures.
England controlled large parts of the opening half and moved the ball comfortably across the pitch, but struggled to convert possession into clear scoring chances.
Their best opportunity before the break came midway through the first half when Declan Rice rose to meet a delivery but directed his effort over the crossbar.
Supporters hoped England would return with more intensity after halftime, similar to their response in their previous outing against Croatia, but the breakthrough never arrived.
England’s first effort on target came in the second half through Anthony Gordon, whose shot failed to trouble Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
Ghana, however, showed they were not in Boston merely to defend. The African side remained organised and nearly produced a winning moment when substitute Prince Adu broke into England’s defence and appeared to go down following a challenge from Ezri Konsa. Appeals for a penalty were waved away, with officials and VAR allowing play to continue.
England came closest to victory late in the match.
With just minutes remaining, Nico O’Reilly’s header struck the crossbar and fell kindly to captain Harry Kane inside the box. But with the goal at his mercy, the striker sent his effort over the bar in what proved to be the final major opportunity of the game.
For Ghana, the result represents an important point that strengthens their chances of progressing to the next round.
For England, questions remain about their attacking sharpness and ability to break down defensive opposition as attention now turns to their decisive final group match against Panama.
