Nigerian singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has claimed he played a pivotal role in changing how cannabis is portrayed in the country’s music industry.

In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the “Free Madness” crooner asserted that his boldness helped normalize the act of smoking cannabis on screen among Nigerian artistes.

“No hard feelings, it’s all love, but don’t forget if not for my sacrifice, none of your faves would have the courage to smoke Igbo on screen,” Terry G wrote.

According to him, before his rise to fame, many Nigerian artistes lacked the confidence to openly display cannabis use in their music videos or public appearances.

However, his comments sparked mixed reactions online, with several critics pointing out that legendary Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was openly associated with cannabis use on and off screen long before Terry G emerged on the scene.
